Breathe Easy

Breathe Easy, 2021

Picture
Video & Movement Art by Gladys Lou
Screened at the Blackwood Gallery as part of the Oneness exhibition

Breathe Easy is a meditative music video and performance art piece inspired by the style of a mantra. Gladys collaborated with the songwriter, Davrielle and the music producer, Ahmed Hegazy to create this piece, guiding the audience to calm down and focus on breathing during anxiety or a panic attack.

The colours flicker and change throughout the video to mimic the shifting states of mind and uncontrolled stream of thoughts when experiencing anxiety. Actions such as ripping paper and hitting objects are imageries and associations in Gladys’ mind when releasing emotions. Visual images such as waterfall and candle flames are natural elements that bring peace to her mind. The choreography follows the rhythm and lyrics of the song, amplifying the emotional overtone of the music.
